Constraints

  • Overcast light all morning, clearing briefly around golden hour
  • Venue didn't allow flash during the ceremony itself
  • Edited gallery needed within two weeks for their thank-you cards

Flat light everyone dreads turned out to be the best possible light for skin tones all day.

What I did

Leaned into the overcast morning rather than fighting it — flat light is unflattering on a sunny day but even and forgiving under cloud cover, so the getting-ready and ceremony photos needed almost no correction.

For the reception, worked entirely off available light and string lighting already installed at the venue, since flash would've flattened the mood they specifically asked to keep.

The outcome

Delivered the full gallery in nine days. Nicola said it was the first wedding gallery she'd seen from friends that "didn't look like a wedding gallery" — several of the candid shots ended up printed larger than the formal portraits.

"We almost skipped the formal photos entirely because of how good the candid's were turning out." — Nicola
